Throughout the year, we offer Advanced Leadership Certifications that you need to become a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor.
This fall the pre-requisites to becoming a lifeguard will be offered:
Bronze Medallion and Bronze Star.

Training and Certification
Courses Required to become a Lifeguard
We offer the Lifesaving Society courses required to become a lifeguard throughout the year. Check the Lifesaving Society for courses being offered in other locations.
- Bronze Star - offered Fall 2019
- Bronze Medallion - offered Fall 2019
- Bronze Cross
- Standard First Aid
- National Lifeguard (NL)
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
Red Cross Water Safety Instructors teach babies, children, teens and adult "Learn to Swim" programs. SCRD Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are required to have NL certification and the Water Safety Instructor Course. The SCRD is not offering Water Safety Instructor training in Fall 2019. Check the Red Cross for Swim Instructor training being offered in other locations.
Lifesaving Instructors teach Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross as well as Rookie, Ranger and Star programs (Junior Lifeguard Club programs). SCRD Lifesaving Instructors are required to have NL certification and the Lifesaving Instructor course. The SCRD is not offering Lifesaving Instructor training in Fall 2019. Check the Lifesaving Society for Lifesaving Instructor training being offered in other locations.
Aquatic Fitness Instructor
Aquatic Fitness Instructors teach drop-in aquatic fitness classes. SCRD Aquatic Fitness Instructors are required to have NL certification and one of the following certifications for teaching aquatic fitness classes:
- British Columbia Recreation & Parks Association (BCRPA)
- Canadian Fitness Education Services (CFES)
- Canadian Aquafit Leaders Alliance (CALA)
