Regional Diversion

The SCRD’s current Solid Waste Management Plan, adopted in 2011, outlines twenty-four initiatives that contribute to reaching targets.

There are two targets in the SCRD’s SWMP:

  • A diversion target at 65% - 69%
  • A per capita waste disposal target at 315kg – 279kg

SCRD Diversion Rate 2011 - 2019

A diversion rate is calculated by dividing the amount of materials diverted (ie. via recycling) by the total waste generated (ie. disposed in the landfill + recycled).

In 2019, a total of 31,810 tonnes of waste was generated in the SCRD; of that amount, 14,866 tonnes, or 52%, was diverted through recycling options.

SCRD Disposal Per Person Per year 2011 - 2019

Disposal per person per year (per capita disposal) is calculated by dividing the total waste disposed by the total population and is expressed in kilograms. The SCRD's disposal per person per year in 2019 was 426 kg/per person.

SCRD REgional Diversion Data 2011 - 2019

The table below provides a detailed overview of the total waste generated in the SCRD between 2011 to 2019. Waste generation is the sum of waste disposed and diverted.

Disposal means buried in the Pender Harbour Landfill (until 2015) and at the Sechelt landfill.

Diversion refers to the amount of materials diverted from the landfill and includes items recycled, composted or reused.

Next Steps

The SCRD is implementing the next step in the Organics Diversion Strategy with the start of curbside collection for food waste and food soiled paper in the new Green Bin program launching Fall 2020.
